In 1847, Jacob Wiss, a cutler and gunsmith from Switzerland, immigrated to the United States and opened a shop in Newark, New Jersey, where he forged surgical instruments and shears. His business thrived, especially during the American Civil War when he produced scissors for Union medical units and uniforms. Over time, Wiss expanded his product line and developed a loyal customer base by replacing any broken products. By 1914, he became the world's largest shears and scissors manufacturer, producing over two million pairs annually. During World War II, his products adapted for military use, and post-war, his aviation snips became best sellers. Now under the Crescent Wiss® brand, the company continues to be a market leader in cutting tools, offering a wide range of reliable products for professional tradespeople.
